Project Description

Mountain2Mountain was founded in November 2006 by Shannon Galpin to empower the voice and value with women in conflict zones.

Shannon took action on her deep conviction that all women and girls deserve the same rights and opportunities as her own daughter. She walked away from her career as an athletic trainer and used her own limited funds to launch M2M and “be the change” she wished to see in the world. After initially collaborating on two projects in Pakistan and Nepal with other non profits, Shannon travelled to Afghanistan in 2008 to develop M2M’s initial projects. Believing that connecting communities and cultures was key to creating successful programs, Shannon created projects based on the premise that storytelling and communication was as important as the projects themselves.

Today, M2M is a registered 501 c 3 nonprofit that has launched projects across Afghanistan to create projects and programs that were unimaginable ten years ago.  Previous work included computer labs, school supply support, kindergartens in rehab clinics and prisons, literacy projects in women’s prisons, and facilitating the land donation and support for a school for the Afghan National Association for the Deaf, graffiti art projects with university art students, and today, support of the Afghan National Women’s Cycling Team and the development of the Afghan Cycling Federation.
